Promoting Positive Change - Mentoring Through AtHletics
$20,000 will help identify students at Hidden Valley Middle school who are at-risk for academic failure, dropping out, and involvement in gangs to participate in a mentoring program after-school.
This project was developed based on input from many community groups including the Community Alliance for Escondido (CAFE). Objectives include the implementation of a mentoring and motivational program for at-risk 7 th and 8 th grade students at Hidden Valley Middle School. A group of students each semester will be chosen by the principal to participate in two hours of academic assistance and two hours of motivational physical drills per week. This will be supplemented with one on one counseling, parent/teacher training and peer-to-peer mentoring. Support from the Escondido Charitable Foundation will enable this program that was only a pilot project last year to be implemented more permanently. |
